Orthodontics



This specialized field diagnoses, prevents and treats dental and facial irregularities called malocclusions. Orthodontics includes dentofacial Orthopedics, which is used to correct problems involving the growth of the jaw. Orthodontic treatment straightens teeth that are rotated, titled, or otherwise improperly aligned, corrects croweded or unevenly spaced teeth, corrects bite problems and aligns the upper and lower jaws in children and adults. The department of orthodontics has a wide range of activities covering all aspects of orthodontics ie. Preventive, Interceptive, Corrective and Surgical.

Dental Materials

All the substances used to assist in rendering dental service. An interdisciplinary field that applies biology, chemistry and physics to the development, understanding and evaluation of materials used in the practice of dentistry. These materials are used clinically in restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, pedodontics and orthodontics. Wax Carvings and drawings are given to students to memorize the shape and anatomy of the teeth. This aids students to perform intricate fillings and restorations in future clinical dentistry.

Prosthodontics



The branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of missing teeth and related mouth or jaw structures by bridges, dentures or other artificial devices. It pertains to the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of the patient by the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous tissues with artificial substitutes. Prosthodontics has three main branches: removeable prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthetics. The department specializes in dental crowns, dental implants, fixed bridges and removable dentures.

Operative Dentistry

     

    The branch of oral health service concerned with operations to restore or reform the hard dental tissues. Operative precedures are required for tooth caries, trauma and impaired function and for improvement of facial appearance. Root canal treatments to save badly decayed teeth is the most commonly performed operative precedure. The field also includes surgical endodontics, fixed dental implants, bleaching, teeth whitening and management of traumatized teeth.

Oral Anatomy


his field is dedicated to the study of human tooth structures. The development, appearance, function types of teeth and dental occlusion fall within its purview. Tooth formation begins before bith and the eventual morphology of teeth is dictated during this time. Dental anatomy is also a taxonomical science: it is concerned with the naming of teeth and the structures of which they are made, this information serving a practical purpose in dental treatment. Consequently, dental problems, it not treated or ignored, often lead to more generalized illness. The subject vastly covers muscles of mastication, temporomandibular joint and detailed embryology of the head, face and oral cavity. Furthermore, our students are taught histology and development of the enamel, dentin, pulp and cementum with further emphasis on the blood supply and innervation of
the teeth.

Community Dentistry



A specialty of dentistry that deals with the community and its aggregated dental or oral health rather than that of the individual patient. It focuses on social oral health policies and investigates the pattern, causes and control of diseases of the oral cavity among various groups of people ie. Dental epidemiology. It deals with preventing dental diseases, prolonging life & promoting physical & mental efficiency through organized dental community efforts for the sanitation of the environment the control of communicable infections, the education of individual in personal hygiene the organization of medical & nursing services for the early diagnosis & preventive treatment of oral disease.

Oral Surgery


A branch of dentistry that treats diseases and abnormalities of the maxillofactial region by surgical means. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is required to treat many mouth diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and facial region. Oral surgery is commonly performed to remove wisdom teeth, prepare the mouth for dentures repair jaw problems and perform root canals. It also involves more advanced procedures as required after trauma or severe disease damages the structures of the mouth.

Oral Pathology



A branch of dentistry that is concerned with the diseases of the teeth, oral cavity and jaws and with the oral manifestations of systemic diseases. It targets diseases of oral and surrounding structures including salivary glands mucous membrance teeth and jaws. Oral pathologists provide the diagnostic and consultative biopsy services to dental practitioners and physicians in the treatment of patients. One of the most important purposes of oral pathology is to give the student the ability to correctly diagnose oral lesions. There are more than 200 different types of diseases that effect the oral cavity & many of these can only be diagnosed through proper microscopic examination.

Periodontology



It is the art and science of examination, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the periodontium; a study of the supporting structures of the teeth, including not only the normal anatomy and physiology of these structures but also the deviations from normal. Clinically the department deals with state of the art dental cleaning which removes food stains, tartar and calculus. A detailed understanding of the oral and dental anatomy and causes of commonly encountered gum diseases is taught in detail.

The discipline of dentistry that deals with the significance and relationship of oral and systemic disease. It involves diagnosing, treating or preventing disease and other damage to the oral cavity. It encompasses treatment by drugs, diet, excercise and other non-surgical means to treat oral diseases or injuries. The department aims to provide a sound academic basis of oral medicine and clinical dental diagnosis for an improved understanding of all dental and maxillofacial diseases and increased skills in its management.
